Diary of A Self-employed Dog Trainer: Coast to Coast

Updated: Aug 17, 2021

Well, life is an adventure! And I don't mean that sardonically. I literally think it's an adventure! Just when you think you've got it figured out, another twist gets thrown in and it makes life that much more enjoyable!

Only having had my business for five years, two of which I was in college and one of which I was in lock down, I have uprooted and moved from one coast to the other. I now happily dwell in sunny Florida!

But contrary to what I thought, it takes a confusing amount of going back and forth between licensing departments, zoning departments, and other departments to figure out what paperwork needs to be completed and how. But I was always taught that at the very least, you can always learn something from the struggle.

I would say I am learning. I am learning to push a little harder while still being uplifting to those with whom I interact. I am learning, not for the first time, to never give up but that it is okay to take a step back and make sure I am headed in the right direction.

As both myself and my business grow and change, things may begin to work a little differently around here. But the one thing that I don't ever plan on changing is my goal of helping people and their pets!

Stay tuned for more updates and posts!

Hi Dallas,

Glad to see you are wading through the paperwork requirements to get up and running. I'd love to hear your thinking about how to choose a puppy that is a good fit with a family and extended family visitors. Hugs, Lisa

For families, I also suggest looking for a puppy who shows signs of settling well. One possible indicator of this is a puppy who will lay down and entertain itself/sleep if there is nothing else to do (however, keep in mind that this can be an…
