Have you ever heard the term “early stimulation” or “early neurological stimulation” in reference to puppies? This process is becoming more and more popular among reputable breeders and fosters as it helps set up puppies for better quality socialization. In today’s short post, I will give you a quick overview of what early stimulation is and why it is a great thing to look into when looking at breeders or newborns in foster homes.
What is Early Stimulation?
Early stimulation is when newborn puppies undergo simple stimulation experiences, starting within three days of birth. This stimulation occurs about twice daily until the puppy is about sixteen weeks old. The types of stimulation that often take place include:
Gently stimulating/tickling paws and between the toes with a Q-tip for 3 to 5 seconds.
Gently holding the puppy’s head up for 3 to 5 seconds.
Gently allowing the puppy to rest on a cold, damp towel for 3 to 5 seconds.
Gently holding the puppy upside down for 3 to 5 seconds.
Gently holding the puppy so it is laying in both hands on its back for 3 to 5 seconds.
Why Should You Be Interested?
This kind of stimulation has been found to help puppies develop better resistance to disease and stress, which can significantly impact how effective your puppy’s socialization training is in the long run. When paired with regular petting, stroking, and, once your puppy is up and walking, socialization training, your puppy will be set up as best it can for life in this big world!
Closing Thoughts
If you are looking for a puppy, I highly recommend asking the puppy’s current guardians if the puppy has been through early neurological stimulation. Though it is not guaranteed that your puppy will be better socialized, as other things go into the socialization process, early stimulation is a great addition that can have a wonderful impact.
