It is officially summertime here in the north west. While it has been summer for a month now according to the calendar, as many people in this area know, summer does not really get started until about halfway through July! Now that we are here, I thought I would share some great summer themed ideas that I have discovered over the years that are perfect for you and your pet! Here are three things your pet will love this summer!
Summer Cool Off Game
During the summer, dogs can get very hot. They do not sweat the same way the people do, and they have thick fur. While this thick fur can actually help protect them from the heat, there are some activities that your dog can do to help it play and stay cool! Playing in the water is one idea, but not all of us have time to take our dog to the lake every day. If your dog needs to be entertained, but stay cool, let them play the ice cube game! Give your dog a bowl (a metal dog bowl is good for this) and put some ice cubes in it. Your dog will enjoy the cool water while also trying to get a good grip on the ice cubes! Simple but fun! Grab a cool drink, sit back, and watch your dog play!
Summer Smoothies!
Summertime is full of yummy smoothies as options for a sweet but healthy drink. But did you know that your dog can have smoothies too?! Make sure to only give your pup about a half a cup of fruit in the smoothie as they should not have much sugar. Blend the fruit with cold water and you will have a fun, sweet surprise drink for your pup! Don’t forget to make one for yourself so you and your dog can kick back and enjoy a snack together! Make sure to test out different fruits with your dog before trying this out (as not all dogs like fruit), and make sure that the fruit you choose is safe for your dog. Summer Scavenger Hunt
As children, many of us loved to dig in the dirt during the summer! It is fun and the dirt under the surface is cooler than the dirt on top. Just like children find this fun, this is something your dog will enjoy as well! Find a place you are comfortable with your dog putting holes in the ground and bury some fun surprises! Then let your dog explore and dig them up again! Don’t be surprised if your dog lays down in the hole for a cool nap when it is finished digging!
I hope you and your dogs enjoy these fun games and snacks and I wish you all a wonderful summer!
